Sino Group Launches Inaugural Digital Art Prize with Niio

Sino x Niio Illumination Art Prizes 2018/9 offer students from around the world the chance to have their work displayed on two of the world’s most prominent screens

Sino Group is delighted to announce the launch a major and ground breaking art prize presented in collaboration with new media art platform of Niio, the Sino x Niio Illumination Art Prizes 2018/9. The international art prizes will allow a unique platform to the next generation of talented digital artists, inviting professional new media artists and art students from around the world to submit designs for the Sino Group’s Christmas and Chinese New Year illuminations.

For the first time two of the Sino Group’s Tsim Sha Tsui properties will be displaying a curated selection of moving image artworks as their festive light display during the periods of Christmas and Chinese New Year. The winning artist securing the unique opportunity to have their work displayed on two of the world’s most prominent screens; the harbour facing facades of the Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and Empire Centre buildings in Hong Kong. The two video walls measure total area of 4,000 square meter and consist of approximately 65,000 technicoloured LED lights.

The Sino x Niio Illumination Art Prizes has come about through our mutual desire to create a unique opportunity for digital artists to have their work seen and celebrated by millions, everyone at Sino is looking forward to seeing the creative designs selected to adorn the facades of Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and Empire Centre buildings this festive season and to bring easily accessible arts to general public.’

The innovative new art prize is the first of its kind in Hong Kong and has been born out of desire to promote young talent and share access to some of the most prominent platforms for digital art in the world. Open to artists around the globe the competition has two categories that are especially themed to allow for creative interpretations of traditional Christmas and Chinese New Year light displays. The two competitions are themed Artistic Blessing and New Life respectively. Artistic Blessing represents festivity, celebration and growth and the winning work will be screened in December 2018 over the Christmas period, New Life symbolises the springtime, development and rejuvenation, with the winning work to be displayed between January and February 2019, over the Chinese New Year. For each competition one winner and one first runner-up and three merits will be chosen by the jury and their winning works will be publicly screened on the Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and the Empire Centre. First place winners will also receive USD 4,000, round-trip travel to Hong Kong (or the equivalent round-trip travel to Tokyo for artists based in Hong Kong) with accommodation, plus a Niio 4k Art Player and Artist Account. Second place winners will receive USD 900, plus a Niio 4k Art Player and Artist Account. Those placed third, fourth and fifth will receive USD 500.

The creative design and spectacular effects of the festive illuminations are a world-class night-time attraction in Hong Kong during the Christmas and New Year period. It grows with Hong Kong people and is a collective memory of the local community. For the first time last year, the illuminations on the waterfront curtain walls of Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and Empire Centre employed the use of innovative LED multimedia video walls to bring happy holiday wishes to Hong Kong. Together, the two video walls measure total area of 4,000 square meter and consist of approximately 65,000 technicoloured LED lights.
