(09/05/2010, Hong Kong) It is not necessary to spend a fortune to express love on Mother’s Day. Kids can make their mothers happy by preparing them a home style 'two dish, one soup'. Sino Group launched the 'Be a Little Chef' cooking workshop under 'Eye-opening Journey 2010' community care programme. 60 underprivileged kids were sponsored to learn cooking skills from dietitian Leslie Chan and the Royal Pacific Hotel's Chinese cuisine chef, Ng Hung, and prepare a nutritious and tasty 'two dish, one soup' within a budget of $38 (the average cost per meal in an underprivileged family). After three training sessions, participating children cooked and served a banquet for their parents on Mother's Day to show love and care.
Acquire skills from dietitian and hotel chef The 'Be a Little Chef' cooking workshop was launched in early April. Kids aged nine to 13 from the Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong, Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Jockey Club Tai Kok Tsui Integrated Services Centre and S.K.H. St. Christopher's Home took part in the event. Dietitian Leslie Chan tutored the workshop, while Ng Hung, Chinese cuisine chef from Sino Group’s Royal Pacific Hotel, acted as cooking consultant. Together they taught the children various cooking skills and stimulated the kids' creativity and ideas to design delicious dishes with high nutritional value. During the workshop, kids designed recipes, bought ingredients and cooked dishes on their own. They went to the wet market to buy ingredients within a budget of $38, including fish, meat and vegetables and fruit, and created their own nutritious and creative dishes.
Create healthful recipes and express love to parents during a 100-person banquet To further encourage children to apply what they learnt in the workshop, kids were divided into groups to cook and serve 'two dish, one soup' for family members in a banquet on Mothers' Day. 60 kids prepared the 'two dish, one soup', from designing the recipe to selecting ingredients, and cooked on their own. The variety of dishes included grapefruit honey chicken wings, meat soup with corn and white gourd and steamed meat pie with pickle. All were presented with a nice combination of colour, smell, taste, and appearance. During the banquet, Chef Ng demonstrated a home-style dish, beef with mushroom in BBQ sauce, and shared cooking tips, bringing much fun to parents and children. The children also presented their parents a 'love medal' and surprise gifts, symbolising every parent is the Gold Medalist of each child.
About Sino Group's 'Eye-Opening Journey' programme Many local children cannot afford to join extra-curricular activities. Sino Group therefore introduced the 'Eye-Opening Journey' community care programme in January 2009 to sponsor underprivileged children on a series of life-enriching, hands-on activities, including soccer training, art events, giant brain challenge games and outreach camps.
