60 underprivileged kids become little chefs and learn about a balanced diet

(11/04/2010, Hong Kong) Sino Group has launched the second event in the 'Eye-opening Journey 2010' community programme, the 'Be a Little Chef' cooking workshop, sponsoring 60 underprivileged kids to learn cooking skills from a dietitian and hotel chef. Spending $38 (the average cost per meal in an underprivileged family) to design and prepare tasty, nourishing 'two dish, one soup' by themselves, the children cook and serve a banquet to show love and care for their parents.

Dietitian joins hands with hotel chef to promote healthy diet
The first session of 'Be a Little Chef' cooking workshop was held today. 60 kids aged 9 to 13 from the Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong, Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Jockey Club Tai Kok Tsui Integrated Services Centre and S.K.H. St. Christopher's Home took part in the event. Dietitian Lesile Chan tutored the workshop while Mr Ng Hung, Chinese cuisine chef from Sino Group’s Royal Pacific Hotel, acted as cooking consultant. Together they taught the children various cooking skills and stimulated kids’ creativity and ideas to design delicious dishes with high nutritional value.

Source ingredients at wet market and express love in a banquet
Interactive games let the kids learn about food's nutritional value and a balanced diet. During the workshop, kids need to design recipes, buy ingredients and cook dishes on their own. They headed to the wet market to buy ingredients with a budget of $38, including fish, meat and vegetables and fruit. They also acquired various cooking and ingredients matching techniques to create their own nutritious and creative dishes. To further encourage children to apply what they learnt in the workshop, kids were divided into groups to cook and serve 'two dish, one soup' for family members in a banquet on Mothers' Day (9 May).

About Sino Group's 'Eye-Opening Journey' programme
Many local children may not be able to join extra-curricular activities due to financial reasons. Sino Group therefore introduced the 'Eye-Opening Journey' community care programme in January 2009 to sponsor underprivileged children on a series of life-enriching, hands-on activities, which include soccer training, art events, giant brain challenge games and outreach camps.
